Living Well

Enjoy more of your life

A healthy lifestyle is good sense for anyone, especially if you suffer pain or Arthritis. Diet and exercise play an important part in your wellbeing – and it’s never too late to make a change or try something new.

A simple check list for healthy joints

  • Maintain your ideal body weight - the more you weigh, the more you strain your joints.
  • Move your body - exercise protects joints by strengthening muscles.
  • Stand up straight - good posture protects joints in your neck, back, hips and knees.
  • Use the big joints - when lifting or carrying something use the largest and strongest joints and muscles.
  • Pace yourself - alternate periods of heavy activity with periods of rest.
  • Listen to your body - ensure you don't overdo it.
  • Don't be static - changing positions regularly helps keep muscles and joints supple.
  • Don't be a weekend warrior - don't take on activities that your body isn't prepared for. Start new activities slowly until you know how your body will react.
  • Wear safety equipment - and make sure it fits.
  • Ask for help - don't take on a job that's too much for one person!

Exercise and Arthritis

One of the best-selling guides to Arthritis (published in 1968, reprinted in 1988 selling millions of copies) offers good insight and sound advice about exercise for Arthritis sufferers. The book ‘There is a Cure for Arthritis’ was written with the aim of bringing the good news of successful biological treatments to millions of Arthritis sufferers, freeing them from pain, hopelessness and desperation.

The Finnish author who emigrated to Canada is Paavo Airola N.D (Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine), internationally known Naturopath and Nutritionist. He studied biological treatments in many leading clinics in Sweden, Germany and Canada. He died in September 2008 of a stroke, age 64. His body of published work over 35 years is respected internationally.

From Airola’s book---
"…The body afflicted with Arthritis usually suffers from poor circulation, stagnation and sluggishness. Restoration of proper circulation is essential before the body can effectively accomplish its own healing task."

"There are many ways to stimulate circulation, such as massage, alternate hot and cold baths, dry brush massage, - but physical exercise in the fresh air is one of the most effective ways to rebuild circulation…outdoor walking is the most popular form."

"We should not forget that often a patient is in such a weak condition he is unable to take any walks. Also, if joints are badly inflamed and painful no exercise should be taken. But as soon as pain has subsided, immediately a gradually increasing program of exercises should be initiated."

"Outside walking is the simplest and most effective way to assist your body’s healing and health restoring processes. "

  • It will stimulate your glands to secrete more hormones
  • It will accelerate your metabolism and digestion
  • It will saturate your blood and all the cells of the body with fresh oxygen
  • It will assist your eliminative organs in detoxifying work
  • It will put you in good spirits, stimulate your thinking and will make you feel happy

"Other exercises could be used, such as deep-breathing, arm and leg exercises... but all specific exercise of various joints, limbs and other parts of the body should be carefully planned in accordance with the needs of each individual case and preferably under expert supervision."
